Gardens of Ryedale Itinerary

Gardens of Ryedale Itinerary

Start off at Castle Howard and explore the superb rose gardens and parkland of this 18th century treasure house – not forgetting a visit to the excellent garden centre. Travel 8 miles to Nunnington Hall. Owned by the National Trust, the 17th century manor house by the River Rye is surrounded by wonderful walled gardens.

Next stop is Duncombe Park in Helmsley where the landscaped gardens, parkland and National Nature Reserve provide an ideal setting for the home of Lord Feversham. A short hop away is the final stop on the tour: Helmsley Walled Garden is a fine kitchen garden on the Duncombe Park estate where fruits and herbs are grown for sale.

To vary the itinerary, other gardens in the area include Jackson’s Wold garden near Malton which has stunning views across the Vale of Pickering; Scampston Walled Garden, a contemporary garden created by an internationally acclaimed designer; Wolds Way Lavender, one of Yorkshire’s largest lavender and herb farms and Yorkshire Lavender which features panoramic views over the Vale of York.

New for 2016!

Planning an outing for your Garden Club or Horticultural Society? Combine the striking contemporary beauty of Scampston Walled Garden with the timeless serenity of Jackson’s Wold for the perfect day out.  For green-fingered groups, it is worth combing a trip to Scampston Walled Garden with a visit to Jackson’s Wold Garden. Juxtapose the two gardens, each very special in their own right, and take away a bounty of inspiration for your own oasis at home.

Jackson’s Wold
From its enviable position on top of the Yorkshire Wolds, the traditional garden has been designed to sit in harmony within the surrounding countryside. The garden is a profusion of colour and scent, with some unusual plants and innovative planting schemes. Open for just three months, and by private arrangement only, Jackson’s Wold is a real delight to behold.

Scampston Walled Garden
The award-winning contemporary Walled Garden at Scampston has gained acclaim world-wide. Designed by Piet Oudolf, the renowned Dutch plantsman, the garden playfully intertwines formal structures with perennial naturalistic planting.

Resting within the eighteenth century kitchen garden walls, and surrounded by Capability Brown parkland, and with a fabulous Café – there is plenty for an eager gardener to explore!

Plan your trip
With the gardens within just nine miles of each other, we can help you organise a seamless visit to both! For groups of ten or more we also offer a special discounted rate. Contact us for more information.
