North York Moors Chamber M
Dates & times for North York Moors Chamber Music Festival,
The concept behind the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival is to provide the highest level of chamber music within historical buildings which themselves celebrate the rich history of the area, one of our country's most stunning and panoramic landscapes. Simplicity and accessibility both in terms of repertoire and of price have been contributory factors in the festival being such an immediate phenomenon. This also erases any hint of elitism as the festival believes such music should be for everyone; the potential power of music to bind locals and visitors together regardless of religion or politics is also a great motivation and many have commented on the informal yet passionate ambience.
It runs during the last two weeks of August which is a spectacular time of year for the North York Moors, carpeted in heather at the height of summer. From the extraordinary St Mary's Church, Lastingham with its Anglo-Saxon crypt to the mists of Whitby Abbey, the panorama across the largest moorland in Europe and the ethereal remnants of Rievaulx—this National Park is one of the outstanding areas of historical and natural beauty in our land and this festival aims to combine every element to make the concerts an all-encompassing experience.
Known for capacity audiences and a particularly friendly, inviting atmosphere this festival has been nominated twice for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award, shortlisted in only its second year. The late Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, former Master of the Queen’s Music, was the festival’s former Patron and composer-in-residence and particularly drawn to the philosophy of the festival and its loyal audiences. There are around 40 musicians who take part each year, all with international careers.
We're delighted that the Oculi Ensemble are returning to the Moors National Park Centre in Danby at 6.30pm for a concert to include Haydn's string quartet Op.20 No.4 in D major, Beethoven Duo No.1 in C major and Mendelssohn's string quintet No.1 in A major.
