Kirkbymoorside Events & What's On.

Kirkbymoorside is a town for you to discover rather than just visit.  It is portrayed in Downtown Abbey as somewhere you can escape to from the upstairs/downstairs world and retreat from reality with a crafty pint at the local Inn.  How true that is, with flower tubs throughout the town maintained by 'Kirkby in Bloom', it is a town full of character.  Situated just south of the North York Moors National Park on the A170 midway between Helmsley and Pickering the town is an ideal location for a walking based holiday, being so near to the beautiful scenery of the moorland area.

Kirkbymoorside High StreetThe town boasts an award-winning butcher and two bakeries supplying artisan breads and pastries.  The loss of the candlestick maker has been more than made up for by the delicatessen, beauty salon, hairdressers and a 'scoop' greengrocer, all of which are truly independent shops.  The chemist is also an off-licence, one of the old banks is now a cafe/restaurant and the original gas works is now a hairdressers.  You'll find a clock repair workshop with a fine display of Yorkshire clocks behind the gift shop.  For those seeking out a bargain Kirkbymoorside is also home to the fortnightly Ryedale Auctions, complemented by four shops specialising in antiques and collectables. On Wednesdays the cobbles on the high street are home to the 760 year old market.

Kirkbymoorside is a community proudly proclaiming its true Yorkshire heritage through its active traditional brass band, which wins many accolades and regularly plays at local events.

Ryedale Folk Museum - Hutton-le-HoleKirkbymoorside possesses a fine medieval cross standing in the old market square, dominated by the wonderful All Saints Church, from whence the bells summon the faithful.

With its variety of hostelries, cafes, fish and chip shops and takeaways, Kirkbymoorside can tempt most appetites.  You're never short of accommodation within the town with a choice of quality hotels and B&B's.

Various walks allow you to discover the fascinating history and geology of the area. Kirkbymoorside boasts two former castle sites, one within Manor Vale Woodland at the start of a walk leading to the Moors.  The other castle site on Vivers Mill provides wonderful views of the town and surrounding countryside.  Those wishing to explore a little further afield will find 11th century Kirkdale Minster, which sits in a tranquil valley with nearby prehistoric caves once the home of wolves and bears.

Access to Kirkbymoorside golf club is through the Manor Vale Woodland which, together with the scenery surrounding the course and the refreshments and food at the 19th hole, enhances the golfing experience.

There are bus links to other market towns and on Sundays the Moorsbus will let you explore the outlying area.

Sitting as it does on the edge of the North York Moors, Kirkbymoorside offers and ideal opportunity to travel the sort distance to discover Hutton-le-Hole, a unique village with its meandering stream, home to Ryedale Folk Museum where you will find an interesting array of bygone items and a collection of rescued and restored historic buildings which display the rich cultural history of Ryedale.

Take time, relax and enjoy all that this quaint town has to offer. Welcome to Kirkbymoorside.
