Details

Rebuilt between 1055 and 1065 by Orm son of Gamal St Gregory's Minster is noted for its rare Anglo-Saxon sundial which is set into the outer wall of the nave above the south door. The inscription on the sundial tells how Orm bought St Gregory's Minster when it was all broken down and fallen and let it be made anew from the ground to Christ and St Gregory. References made in the inscription allow the building to be dated with remarkable precision. With a further three large stone crosses built into the walls of the church the history of Christian worship at this fascinating site can be read in the fabric of the building. Inside the church 20th century windows by Kempe and Stammers bathe the building in brilliant light and add to the atmosphere of this unique place of worship. Noted particularly for its choir and special choral services. Service times: 1st 3rd & 5th Sun 1100 Holy Communion (BCP); 2nd & 4th Sun 1100 (Sept - April) Matins (May - Aug) Evensong.
