Rievaulx Abbey
Details
Escape the crowds and experience the serene beauty of this impressive monastic site in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Rievaulx Abbey was founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1132 and became one of England's wealthiest monasteries before its dissolution by King Henry VIII in 1538. Highlights of this long history are displayed in the indoor interactive museum and The Work of God and Man exhibition shows how religion blended with business in the lives of the monks. Afterwards there's delicious local food to enjoy in the tea room and for families wanting to let off steam plenty of walking and cycling trails around the site.
To enhance your experience at Rievaulx we are currently carrying out an exciting renovation project.
In 2016, visitors will be able to enjoy a new Museum displaying objects that shed light on the uniqueness of Rievaulx and the fascinating people who founded and developed the Abbey.
The Abbey will be open to visitors throughout the work but we encourage drivers to park in the nearby village of Helmsley, located just 3 miles away, and take advantage of the beautiful walking route along the scenic Cleveland Way due to reduced parking on site.
We’ll be providing a light range of refreshments until our new facilities open in May 2016 and for those looking for something more filling, make sure you visit nearby Byland Abbey Inn serving some of Yorkshire’s finest offerings in the tearoom.
