Many of the towns and villages within Ryedale will be getting into the festive spirit with decorations and lights appearing from the end of November. Combined with special shopping evenings in the run up to the big day, Ryedale's market towns are a great visit to pick up those extra special gifts.

Christmas is also the time to experience the events, festivals and markets within the area. Ryedale has a packed calander of festive events in the lead up to Christmas with many stately homes opening their doors with unique experiences.

Christmas Light Switch-On's

Pickering Christmas Lights Switch-On - 3rd December
For a small town, Pickering makes a big deal out of its Christmas Lights switch on, with a special celebratory event held each year, packed with music and family friendly, festive entertainment.  Regular attractions include Santa and his grotto, a Christmas market, hog roast, performances from local bands and community groups, as well as a spectacular lights display that adds a real festive feel to the town. Santa will be arriving in the Market Place from 4.30pm.  There will also be a Christmas Fair in the Memorial Hall.

Helmsley Angel Festival 3rd December - 6th January
Helmsley is to host a brand new event this Christmas – and it promises to be a heavenly one. The Angel Festival will launch on 3rd December, to coincide with Small Business Saturday, and run until the 12th Night. Inside and out, the town will be taken over by a host of angels of all shapes and sizes  – with businesses, residents and local organisations all getting involved. Helmsley in Business, the organisation behind the event, is running Willow Angel Workshops in September to help people create angelic masterpieces, but others will be making angels out of anything from flowers and cakes to lights and performance art.

The festival will also involve a family friendly hunt for one missing angel, who likes to play hide and seek. People finding Rory the Angel in his various hiding places around town will be encouraged to pose for a selfie for the chance to win prizes.

Thornton-le-Dale Christmas Lights Switch-On - 3rd December
Santa arrives at 5pm in his usual unique transport. The Lights will be switched on at 6.00 pm however things will be underway from around 4.30pm with a variety of seasonal stalls serving hot food and mulled wine in the area around The Green.  This year we are planning a new stall which will offer you the opportunity to play the most unusual games! There will also be the regular musical contributions from the E.A.S.Y. Band and the local school choir. Santa Claus will be arriving at 5pm and will be around for the rest of the evening with gifts for all the children who visit his grotto.
